Hi, This doesn't seem like a very active forum so I thought I would try some conversation starters. What state is everone from? Im from Indiana. How many ducks do you have? Right now I only have two, but hopefully more to come! What colors of ducks do you raise? Mine are black and white (pied?) Do you have or raise any other animals? We live on a horse farm and usually have anywhere from 10+ horses. We also have 4 cats, 2 dogs, a cow, a goat, 2 rabbits, and several goldfish. All pets of course. etc, etc, etc....

This forum hasn't been up very long and with spring comes a lot of outdoor activities so most people don't spend near as much time online, myself, I'm so busy with work and school that I can barely feed my critters - I sure shouldn't spend as much time online as I do but I have a few places I have to check in on on a daily basis.
I'll have to post a short bio later - right now I'm heading to bed after a17 hour day.

Hi, I'm in central Texas way out in the country. I am a retired RN, a mom and grandma...a young grandma. Real young. I am primarily into raising dairy goats but also have assorted other farm animals. I have always loved Muscovies and we have had them around here for years. Unfortunately, we are down to one white drake. He is 9 years old, a bit of a cripple, but happy. Predators got most of the goats and poultry many years ago before we found out about Livestock Guardian Dogs. Now we have 3 Great Pyrenees who protect the goats and the poultry. So our animals are safe. These dogs even keep predatory birds away. I am search of more Muscovies now that we have the Pryenees dogs to protect them. I'm looking to aquire rare colors. I am happy to have found this forum also. I have some practical experience raising Muscovies, they used to come out of our ears here, babies all the time everywhere, but I am just now learning about the different colors and methods of management. So nice to see this place a bit more active

Black and white muscovies are all that are available around here. I would like to incorporate other colors later if I can get the hang of this! However, I do like the beautiful rainbow colors that the black shines. Has anyone ever had experience with keeping chickens with their Muscovies? We are considering getting a hen. We miss having fresh eggs. I am getting ready to get two Campbell/Mallard cross ducks from a friend. Does anyone know how to sex ducklings? Maybe if I can just get two females I can skip the chicken... Might also produce some interesting looking mules, you think? I'll try to post photos of my (Im calling them Callards LOL) babys soon. Very nice to meet all of you. Its nice to know there is someone I can get advice from. Thanks!

We're in Mass. right now, but we're in the throes of a move to our new farm in Connecticut. We have three ducklings. I just posted over on Duckling Care for help determining color and gender. (Please go over and take a peak . Let me know what you think!) We planned for Muscovies to help with pest control. The ducklings are currently free-ranging for a couple of hours each day (when we're out there). I've noticed that they stay within several hundred feet of their doghouse and waterbowl. They've become accustomed to us, and will let the kids sit down next to them and pet them. The only time I've been pecked at is when I arrive with a bowl of food. They all descend upon it at once and can't wait for me to put it down on the ground. We have alpacas, angora rabbits, and a house dog. As soon as we move we'll add a whole bunch of guinea fowl for more pest control. Can't get enough of that! Smiles, Kate www.thesurisecret.com

Nice to meet you. Right now this forum doesn't seem very active, but I am trying desperately to keep it that way. There is also another great Muscovy group on MSN. Brit

Kate,
I'll go check the photos out. I just had 6 cream / self blue ducklings hatch today. I can't tell which is which, I didn't have a lot of time to spend with them as I was chasing pigs down all evening!

How funny! I just looked at the sheared alpaca. Thats kind of how my dog looks before and after his summer hairdo. Can you spin dog hair? I would think my dog would make a nice sweater, he has such a soft coat. Oh well, I bet the alpaca feels much better anyway. Brit :-)

Can you spin dog hair? Brit :-) Brit, Some people *do* spin dog hair. I've never tried it. I'm working with angora rabbit, alpaca, and silk right now. Maybe some blends... Alpaca *is* soft. I just love the way it feels! Smiles, Kate www.thesurisecret.com

I am a retired zoologist. We live in Virginia. Currently, we do not have muscovies, but I am planning to get a pair or two. We have Pilgrim geese, two Nubian goats, producing good milk, 20 chickens and two dogs, hunting, helping to protect chickens from small predators and just good pets. I would like to trade Pilgrims for Muscovy ducks.
